Grid Art

I knew for this project I wanted to use fabric, because I did a lot of sewing projects throughout  high school  and it’s a  medium  I enjoy. At  first  I  thought  I would cut the fabric into squares, but when I realized I  wouldn ’t be able to bring my sewing machine to work with I switched to cutting the fabric into strips and weaving them together. Weaving is pretty time  consuming   and also  apparently more precise than I remember it being; I ended up having some horizontal strips that weren’t quite long enough. I wasn’t sure what measurements I should have used to calibrate for the fact that the vertical strips would likely have some space between them and move around while I was working. This caused more space than I had measured for to be taken up and all the horizontal strips didn’t quite reach. In a perfect world the measurements would have been  correct, but  take in to account my limited tools and back pain from my poorly planned working space that was just the m

Camera Obscura Alternate Assignment

Image
Our process in creating the camera obscura began with covering the floor to ceiling in trash bags. We ended up having to do two layers to make it more opaque, as well as having to cover one of the ceiling lights that couldn't be turned off. Despite the lack of air conditioning in our work area, we managed to create a space with as few light leaks as we could manage.        Once everything was covered, we cut a hole in the bags at the center of the window a few inches across and were a bit shocked when it actually worked and we saw the cityscape sprawled across the wall in front of us. All of the colors on the wall, the darkness of the room, and seeing boats float across the river upside down in real time made it feel almost dream-like. It really felt like we had stepped into a moving picture, and essentially we had.         We played around with being in front of the image to create differing visuals when taking pictures of our set up. There's just somethi

Exquisite Corpse

This was an interesting exercise because there is no way of predicting what the next person is going to draw. I feel like a lot of times with projects you are expected to have a vision and work towards reaching that, but the process is completely different if the vision isn't only yours and has aspects of it that you won't even have input on, so you kind of just have to let go. And the phrase 'exquisite corpse' alone was enough to fascinate me and will definitely be something I remember.
