Introduction

As far as classes go, I find myself excited for this one. My hope is that I will get a lot out of it. As someone who is inexperienced when it comes to technology but who has always been a fan of art of all sorts, I look forward to finding where those two categories intersect and how my views of them will become more informed.

This is my first foray into the blogosphere, at least with one that I have so much creative control over, so this class has already stretched what I am used to; I have never put my work in such a public place and hope that this format will push me to do work that I will be proud to share.

Personally, I love to write and am glad this class is incorporating that.  On a day to day basis one could find me listening to music (i.e. Blue Suede's 'Hooked on a Feeling' 20 times in a row, give or take), watching sitcoms, stressing that the outfit I have chosen for the day does not accurately portray my personality, and video chatting with my, if I must concede, very funny friends. You might also find me overthinking various things that I am required to type and breaking fourth walls in a meager attempt at humor. I'm looking forward to what the rest of the semester will bring.

I knew for this project I wanted to use fabric, because I did a lot of sewing projects throughout  high school  and it’s a  medium  I enjoy. At  first  I  thought  I would cut the fabric into squares, but when I realized I  wouldn ’t be able to bring my sewing machine to work with I switched to cutting the fabric into strips and weaving them together. Weaving is pretty time  consuming   and also  apparently more precise than I remember it being; I ended up having some horizontal strips that weren’t quite long enough. I wasn’t sure what measurements I should have used to calibrate for the fact that the vertical strips would likely have some space between them and move around while I was working. This caused more space than I had measured for to be taken up and all the horizontal strips didn’t quite reach. Haiku Project

      the sky I see seems full of magnolia blossoms            -Natsume Soseki      For my process I put this project together in reverse order, with the digital editing part happening first and the creating on paper happening second. For the digital part, I started with an image that I wanted to be my background and chose more images with a similar color scheme and subject to layer on top of it and adjusted the transparencies so they would meld together into one image. For the final images, I was inspired by previous exercises that we have done in class. I liked the idea that we practiced of using marker to draw over a printed image, which to me feels like a more interactive way to edit. I used markers with colors that are in the pictures to draw over some lines in the images along with adding designs outside of the frame of the picture. Obsessive Drawing

       This obsessive drawing began as an exercise in class, drawing dots on top of certain words and connecting them in any way we wanted. I like the way the original drawing looks like a crystal; even though it is a flat object it takes on a three dimensional prismatic quality, like you'd expect it to reflect light in all directions. My favorite thing about it is that "glass" is a word printed on the page, which mirrors the glass-like effect of the drawing. The edited version looks to me like melting glass, like it sat in hot enough light that it started dripping. I like how I got to melt and stretch the words on the page also and make them a part of the piece as a whole. There was something comforting that came from not starting off with a blank page, and I enjoyed how the words could inform the drawing.
